What Makes Our Lessons Different
Personalised Curriculum
We don't follow a rigid method book unless it genuinely serves your goals. If you're passionate about jazz but the standard curriculum focuses on classical, we adjust. If you learn better by ear than by reading, we incorporate that. Your lesson plan is yours alone.
Professional-Grade Instruments
All our teaching studios are equipped with quality instruments maintained by professional technicians. Students using our pianos, drums, or amplifiers experience the same responsiveness they'd encounter in professional settings, which matters when developing proper technique.
Supportive Practice Guidance
Knowing what to practice matters as much as how much you practice. Every lesson concludes with clear, achievable practice goals for the week ahead. We help you structure practice time efficiently so you see progress even with limited hours available.
Real-World Application
Our teachers are working musicians who understand music beyond the teaching studio. They can guide you through audition preparation, help you navigate the session musician world, or simply teach you how to jam with friends effectively. Theory never exists in isolation from practical application.
Choosing the Right Lesson Length
30-Minute Lessons
Best for: Young beginners (ages 5-8), adult beginners testing the waters, or supplementary theory sessions alongside instrumental study.
What to expect: Focused work on specific techniques or pieces. Brief but concentrated attention that works well for shorter attention spans.
45-Minute Lessons
Best for: Intermediate students, older beginners (ages 9+), or anyone juggling multiple commitments but wanting substantive instruction.
What to expect: Time for technique work, repertoire practice, and theory integration. The most popular choice among our students.
60-Minute Lessons
Best for: Advanced students, those preparing for exams or auditions, or anyone deeply committed to rapid progress.
What to expect: Comprehensive sessions covering multiple pieces, detailed technical refinement, and in-depth musical analysis. Allows for nuanced discussion and exploration.
The Learning Process
Initial Consultation
Before booking your first lesson, we have a conversation about your musical background and goals. This helps us match you with the instructor whose teaching style and expertise best align with what you're after. If you're unsure which instrument to pursue, we can discuss the practical and musical considerations of each.
Assessment and Goal Setting
Your first lesson includes an informal assessment of your current ability and a detailed discussion about where you'd like to be in three months, six months, a year. This creates a roadmap we can reference and adjust as you progress. For complete beginners, we focus instead on what drew you to music and what you hope playing will feel like.
Regular Instruction
Weekly or fortnightly lessons maintain momentum while giving you adequate practice time between sessions. Your teacher tracks your development, celebrates breakthroughs, and troubleshoots challenges as they arise. Lessons build on each other progressively, but remain flexible enough to address questions or difficulties that emerge during home practice.
Progress Reviews
Every few months, we pause to evaluate how you're developing against the goals we set initially. Sometimes students discover their interests have shifted — perhaps from classical to jazz, or from casual playing to exam preparation. These checkpoints ensure your lessons continue serving your evolving musical journey.
Performance Opportunities
When you're ready, our biannual recitals offer a chance to perform for an encouraging audience. Many students find that preparing for performance accelerates their progress and builds confidence. Participation is always voluntary — some students thrive on performance, while others prefer to keep their playing private.
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. Many students start with 30-minute sessions and increase to 45 or 60 minutes as their stamina and commitment grow. Others reduce lesson length during particularly busy periods. Just discuss any changes with your teacher and we'll adjust your schedule accordingly.
Yes. When multiple family members study with us simultaneously, the second student receives 10% off their lessons, and additional family members receive 15% off. This applies to both individual lesson payments and packages.
With 24 hours notice, we'll reschedule at no charge. Cancellations with less notice are unfortunately non-refundable, as your teacher has reserved that time for you. However, we understand genuine emergencies happen and will always work with you when we can.
This varies enormously depending on practice habits, prior experience, and individual learning pace. Most students notice meaningful improvement within 8-12 weeks of consistent practice. We're more interested in sustainable progress than quick results that don't last.
Not at all. Many students never take a single exam and have wonderfully fulfilling musical journeys. Exams can provide useful structure and external validation, but they're entirely optional. We support whichever approach resonates with you.
Yes, without any awkwardness. Sometimes personality or teaching style doesn't click, and that's completely normal. We'd much rather switch you to someone who suits your learning preferences than have you struggle with an incompatible pairing.
